About us

Teignbridge Citizens Advice Bureaux (CABx) has 3 main bureau in Newton Abbot, Dawlish and Teignmouth, with outreach services in Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Chudleigh, Exminster and Moretonhampstead.

Newton Abbot Bureau

The Newton Abbot Bureau was established in 1972 and serves a largely rural area. The Bureau also takes part in monthly pre-release courses held at Channings Wood prison.

The bureau moved to the Bank House Centre in 1993 to meet demand, which has now been exceeded and the bureau requires larger premises.

Teignmouth and Dawlish Bureau

The Teignmouth Bureau began in 1975 as an outreach session run by the Newton Abbot Bureau. The Dawlish Bureau also started in this way in 1975. By April 1980 demand for the service had increased to such an extent that they were registered with Citizens Advice as a separate bureau, sharing the same management committee as the Newton Abbot bureau.

The Teignmouth bureau moved to the library in May 1989 and the Dawlish bureau moved to "Tunnicliffe", Barton Hill in September 1999.

Key Achievements

Over the years the bureaux have developed specific strengths in:

  1. Providing a generalist advice service that takes a holistic approach. In April 2001 Teignbridge CABx were awarded a quality assurance by the Legal Services Commissions (LSC) - a quality Mark in General Help.
  2. Providing basic training as a member of South Devon Consortium of Bureaux. The consortium comprises Teignbridge CABx, Torbay CABx, South Hams CABx and Plymouth CAB. In April 2001, Teignbridge CABx were awarded LIAG accreditation with the Learning and Skills Council.
  3. Welfare benefits and debt work including representation of clients at tribunals, etc. In October 2000, Teignbridge CABx commenced a LSC pre-franchise contract in welfare benefits and debt, leading to a specialist Quality Mark, awarded in January 2002.
  4. Taking a lead role in a Welfare Benefits Take-up Campaign during 2000/2001, which resulted in over £500,000 additional benefits secured per annum in the Teignbridge District.

Funding

As charities, Citizens Advice Bureaux rely on grants and donations to maintain core activities and to implement new projects. Government and local authority grants fund the core of our work (see our annual report for details). In addition we have a wide range of projects that also require funding. A number of corporate and charitable trusts already support the Citizens Advice service as donors or Friends of CABx.

If you would like to help us raise funds or would like to make a donation to our service please contact us.
